Cook The Green Beans in a Crock Pot

In the previous article I said that green beans are rich in fiber can lower cholesterol and prevent the rise in blood sugar. Therefore, the green beans are very important to be consumed. The correct way to cook green beans you should also know that nutrient content in beans is not much reduced due to the cooking process. On this occasion, I will share with you how to cook green beans in a crock pot.

Things You'll Need
  • Crock Pot
  • 4 (14 1/2 ounce) cans green beans, drained
  • 2 cans chicken broth, seasoned with roasted garlic
  • 1 onion, cleaned and cut into 6 wedges
  • 1/2 lb bacon, cut into small pieces and semi fried
  • salt, to taste
  • pepper, to taste

Step by step
Step 1
Wash fresh green beans with cool water. If you are using frozen green beans, thaw them first by placing them in a bowl covered with cool water. Canned green beans can do not need to be washed.

Step 2
Cut green beans diagonally or cross-cut. If you are using fresh green beans, and like them to have a sweeter taste, cut them in small pieces. Beans that are older and more mature should be cut French style -- sliced lengthwise.

Step 3
Add green beans to the Crock Pot. The amount of green beans used should be determined by the number of servings desired.

Step 4
Season green beans to taste using onion, salt, pepper, and mix the chicken broth and bacon that have been cut into small pieces and semi fried.

Step 5
Add water to the Crock Pot, covering the green beans completely. If you are using canned green beans, use the juice from the can instead of fresh water.

Step 6
Stir all ingredients and cover tightly with lid. Cook on low for four to six hours.

Tips and Warnings
  • Do not overcook the green beans. Overcooking leads to a loss in nutrients. If you are picking your green beans from a garden, pick beans that are not over-mature. Over-mature beans will have a starchy taste, and be tough and stringy.
  • If you use too much water, your green beans will not be tasty. If you use too little water, your green beans may scorch and not taste good. You do need to experiment one day when you are going to be home. All crock pots are different - as are all cooks. Use as little water as possible to retain flavors.
